Welcome to A Little Off the Ordinary — a place for vintage recipes, roadside lore, seasonal traditions, old movies, and the occasional question that sends me down a rabbit hole I wasn’t expecting.

I started this site because I’m endlessly curious about the things people used to know without needing them explained — and the ordinary things that become a lot more interesting once you start poking at them.

Sometimes that means opening an old cookbook and wondering what sweet milk is, how much butter is “the size of an egg,” or why anyone thought a measurement like a gill required no further explanation.

Other times it means remembering a drive-in movie, following an odd bit of roadside history, digging into a seasonal tradition, or discovering a story hiding in something most of us would normally walk right past.

There will be old recipes here, because old cookbooks and handwritten recipe cards are wonderful little time capsules. They tell us what people ate, how they cooked, what they substituted, and occasionally leave behind instructions that made perfect sense at the time and require a bit of detective work now.

But this isn’t only a recipe site.

There are backroads to wander, forgotten stories to uncover, seasons worth paying attention to, and on Friday nights, there’s always room for a trip to the drive-in.

I want the useful answer to be here when you’re looking for one, but there should still be room for the story, the odd detail, and the occasional Great-Aunt Mabel who is absolutely not responsible for what comes out of your oven.

So pull up a chair, poke around, and see what catches your eye.
